Are you experiencing vaginal dryness and discomfort? Women no longer have to live with vaginal dryness thanks to MonaLisa Touch Therapy.
What is Vaginal Dryness?
In the body, glands at the neck of the womb (the cervix) keep the vagina supple and moist by creating a natural lubrication. The moisture moves slowly down, through the vagina, keeping it clean and removing dead cells. The hormone estrogen is responsible for signaling the glands to release moisture and maintain the fluid that helps keep the lining of the vagina healthy, thick and elastic. When estrogen levels decrease, the level of moisture will decrease, causing vaginal dryness. There are several things which can cause a drop in estrogen levels such as:
- Menopause
- Childbirth and Breastfeeding
- Radiation, or Chemotherapy
- Surgical Removal of the Ovaries
- Anti-estrogen medications used to treat uterine fibroids or endometriosis
- Allergy and Cold Medications
- Douching
What are the Symptoms of Vaginal Dryness?
A common symptom of vaginal dryness is pain during sexual intercourse. The thinning of the skin around the vagina, caused by a drop in estrogen levels can cause it to become damaged easily. This damage can often occur during sex, when lubrication is poor. Painful intercourse can cause a decrease in sexual desire and arousal.
Vaginal dryness can also make it uncomfortable to sit, stand, exercise, urinate or even work. It can cause burning and itching in the vaginal area. The pain from vaginal dryness can affect everyday life for women, having a detrimental effect on the quality of life.
Oftentimes, women turn to topical estrogen therapy or hormone therapy. Topical treatments, however, don’t always give women enough estrogen to relieve vaginal dryness symptoms. Hormone therapy isn’t always a good solution either, due to unwanted side-effects and associated risks.
Now, there is a new breakthrough therapy offered to treat vaginal dryness. The non-surgical procedure, called MonaLisa Touch, has been proven to treat vaginal dryness and restore the healthy balance to the mucus membrane.
What is MonaLisa Touch?
MonaLisa Touch™ is a non-surgical, in-office procedure that does not requires anesthesia. Through the use of a CO2 laser, controlled energy is delivered to the vaginal tissue. This energy is used to revitalize the cells in the vaginal mucosa (vaginal tissue) to help jump-start collagen production. New collagen reestablishes the conditions the vaginal mucosa once had, restoring and preventing estrogen drops in the vaginal tissue.
How is MonaLisa Touch Performed?
This innovative procedure is virtually painless and takes less than five minutes to perform. Some patients report some discomfort the first time the probe is inserted into the vaginal canal, but the treatment itself is not painful. Many patients say that the procedure feels like a gentle vibration.
The treatment helps the mucosa tissue become more nourished and hydrated and the epithelium becomes thicker, more toned and more elastic. It also reestablishes the correct vaginal pH, which helps maintain its natural protective barrier and reduces the risk of infection.
Our practice recommends patients having three separate treatments, spaced six weeks apart. Patients should refrain from sexual activity for 2-3 days after the procedure. During the healing period it may be recommended to avoid lifting weights or some activities, such as a hot bath. A member of our team will go over post-procedure protocols to help guarantee a speedy recovery.
